We preordered this beautiful book months ago, because my four year old son LOVES the Statue of Liberty and I just want to recommend it to everyone. It's witty and heartwarming and it reminds me of what would happen if Vonnegut wrote a children's book.
I bought this book in hardcover to give to my grandson, hoping it would be non-fiction and teaching about the history and significance of the Statue of Liberty. Instead of being a solid piece of non-fiction, the book offers, "Here is an idea. Here is a theory. Here is a reminder." It goes on to suggest that the fact that her foot is moving means that we should completely open our U.S. borders. Think twice before trying to influence young minds with political propaganda before they know the facts and teach them instead to think for themselves. This book doesn't accomplish that purpose.
This is our kids favorite book (4 and 7) and an incredibly important narrative, especially for this particular time. It is a smart and proactive lesson in American history that both kids and adults can sink Into. I am so thrilled to have discovered it. Thank you Dave Eggers, and to every single person who had anything to do with making this book possible. You have done good!! More like this, please!!
The purchase was for my granddaughter who was born in Australia and holds dual citizenship. The story that Lady Liberty is on the move gives us all hope that democracy is evolving and what we are experiencing today won't last forever.
This book should be on everyone’s shelf! It’s a beautiful story that folds together history, patriotism, immigration, and our common humanity! I have always had an affinity for Lady Liberty, but in my studies and personal observations, I have never considered the symbolism of her right foot. I am moved and empowered by this book and have loved sharing it with my own children, teachers, students, and have given it as a gift multiple times. The art is beautiful, the writing engages both adults and children, and the message is timely and deserves to be amplified!
Clever ,well written history of little known facts about the Statue of LibertyShould be required reading in all classrooms from 3rd grade on .!Enough material and information for people of all ages to think about and discuss .Topics could range from why Brown statue changed to green to the reasons and hazards immigrants faced when they decided to come to AmericaAn excellent text enhanced with clever illustrations to attract young and old . Very impressive😊
We bought this book after reading Dave Eggers other book "The Bridge Will Not be Gray" which is about the Golden Gate Bridge. This book is about the statue liberty. The author takes a great perspective and interpretation of the statue along with providing historical facts about the iconic statue. Great book!
This book is the kind of project that could easily have drifted into the precious or heavy-handed. The effusive blurbs certainly made me a bit wary. Well, not to worry.Eggers takes an interesting approach. The book starts off playful and lighthearted. We have a bit of fun with the general, you know, Frenchness of the statue. There are a few little jokes that remind us that the statue was after all basically a cool present. We follow its design, construction and transport to the U.S., with neat factoids scattered through the brief, snappy captions to the spare but colorful and expressive drawings. As the book progresses, though, we gently and obliquely touch on the grander importance of Lady Liberty and what she represents. This is a timely reminder of what it means to have been, and to still be, and to continue to be, a nation of immigrants, but without any explicit soapboxing. The statue is a modern wonder of the world and is the most American of symbols. This book gently and open-heartedly reminds us of that, and reminds us of what it all means, while still being very kid friendly. A nice find.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
